Edinburgh doesn't get talked about as much as Manchester or Leeds in the "compliance hiring outside London" conversation. That's a mistake. It's the UK's second-largest financial centre in its own right, not a satellite of anywhere, and for compliance hiring specifically it's arguably the strongest specialist market outside the capital.
The difference is what Edinburgh specialises in. A major UK banking group is headquartered here, alongside some of the country's largest asset managers and insurers. That mix pushes Edinburgh's compliance market hard into investment compliance, fund governance and conduct risk, in a way that's genuinely rare elsewhere in the UK. If you've built a career around FCA conduct rules, fund oversight or investment risk rather than pure banking AML, Edinburgh is one of the few UK cities where that's the norm rather than the exception.
That doesn't mean financial crime and AML hiring is thin here. The concentration of banking group functions based in the city keeps that pipeline steady too. But candidates with generalist compliance backgrounds sometimes find Edinburgh's market a harder read than a city like Glasgow or Belfast, simply because so much of the demand is asset-management-specific.
Worth knowing if you're relocating for a role: Edinburgh's compliance salaries tend to track closer to London than most other UK cities do, reflecting how specialised and senior a lot of the asset management compliance hiring here actually is. It's not a city known for high-volume entry-level KYC hiring the way Glasgow or Belfast are. It's more a city where deep sector experience gets rewarded specifically.
