RWE

German energy company founded in 1898 in Essen, generating power from wind, solar, battery storage and other sources, and operating electricity supply and grid businesses across Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

RWE is a German energy company headquartered in Essen, where it was founded in 1898 as a local municipal electricity utility. It has since grown into one of Europe's largest power producers and one of the world's leading companies in renewable energy, with operations spanning Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

The company generates power from offshore and onshore wind, solar energy and battery storage, and is developing green hydrogen and floating offshore wind technology. Its technical footprint also includes nuclear power, gas-fired power generation, and coal and lignite power generation, alongside electricity grid and utility operations. The business retains its original activity as a regional electricity supplier and municipal utility.

RWE invests billions annually in offshore and onshore wind, solar and battery storage. In 2018 international renewable generation assets worth billions were transferred to the company as part of an asset swap with E.ON. The firm has committed to being carbon neutral by 2040, a target that underpins its transformation across generation portfolios and regulated utility operations.

Work in the sector spans energy and utilities, electricity generation, renewable energy and power production, with a company culture shaped by a 125-year heritage and a stated focus on sustainability, innovation and the global energy transition.
