If you're a paralegal waiting on a training contract, compliance is the move most people don't tell you about. You can make it without retraining, and you're already doing half the job.

Why do paralegals make good compliance staff?

Look at what you do every week. Client ID checks. Source of funds questions. Conflict searches. File reviews. Chasing missing documents. That's compliance work, and law firms, banks and fintechs all pay people to do it full time.

You also read rules for a living. Working out what a regulation means for a real client is the core skill in every compliance job, and most graduates can't show it on a CV yet. You can.

Which jobs should you go for?

Conflicts analyst. Law firms hire people to spot conflicts of interest before the firm takes on a client. It's the closest match to paralegal work. We cover it in the three skills that matter for a law firm conflicts analyst.

KYC and AML analyst. You check who customers are and whether their money looks clean. Banks and fintechs hire constantly. Our KYC and AML career guide explains the route.

Law firm risk and compliance. Bigger firms run their own risk teams covering AML, conflicts and regulatory issues.

Compliance officer. Once you have a year or two behind you, this is the natural next step. See live compliance officer roles.

Why is now a good time to move?

Law firm compliance is about to need more people. On 31 July 2026 the Legal Services Board approved SRA rules that stop people who steer the business from also holding the COLP or COFA role. They apply to firms with turnover above £600,000 or client money above £2 million, which is around 576 firms. The rules are expected to start in early 2027, though the SRA hasn't confirmed a date. Those firms will need compliance people who sit outside management.

What does it pay?

2026 UK salary guides put KYC analyst starting pay at around £30,000 to £40,000 and junior compliance roles at £22,000 to £30,000. Financial services compliance officers earn £45,000 to £65,000. London pays roughly 15 to 25 percent more than the regions.

Paralegal pay varies a lot by firm and region, so put your own number next to these. Many ads leave salary out, so ask early in the process.

How do you make the move?

Rewrite your CV around the compliance parts of your job. Lead with client onboarding, ID verification, conflict checks and file reviews, with numbers where you have them. Then apply for analyst roles. Don't wait to qualify first.

If you want a qualification later, the ICA certificates are the usual choice. Read whether ICA accreditation is worth it, then prepare with how to prepare for an AML or financial crime interview.

FAQs

Can a paralegal become a compliance officer?

Yes. Many start as an analyst and move up to officer within a few years. Some law firms hire paralegals straight into risk and compliance teams.

Do I need the SQE or a training contract?

No. Compliance and financial crime roles rarely ask for either.

Do I need a law degree?

Not for most analyst roles. Plenty of KYC and AML jobs accept any degree subject.

Will I earn more in compliance than as a paralegal?

It depends on your current pay. KYC roles often start at £35,000 or more, so compare that with what you earn now.
