The AA is the UK's largest motoring organisation, providing roadside assistance to 14.5m members alongside insurance, financial services, driver training and vehicle-related businesses.
The AA (Automobile Association) is the United Kingdom's largest motoring organisation, founded in London in June 1905 and operating for more than a century. Its regulated activities span insurance and financial services: AA Insurance offers motor and home policies through a panel of underwriters that includes The AA's own in-house underwriter, while AA Financial Services provides a range of financial products for motorists. Alongside these, the organisation runs driver training businesses, including DriveTech, a provider of driver education and training services, and The AA Driving School for learner drivers.
Breakdown cover and roadside assistance remain the core business, delivered to both consumers and businesses by more than 2,700 patrols operating vans and motorbikes. The AA supports 14.5 million roadside members and attended 3.5 million breakdowns last year, a membership grown from an original 90 members at its founding.
Wider operations include AA Smart Care, a booking service for AA certified garages, and AA Cars, a used car vendor offering free vehicle history checks and breakdown cover. Technical work spans connected car technology, roadside assistance operations, vehicle inspection and garage booking platforms, and insurance underwriting; the company describes a history of adopting new technology, from early motorbike patrols to piloting connected cars.
The AA states that it was founded by and for motorists and that its mission is to protect the motorist and put members' interests first, an ethos it describes as largely unchanged since 1905.
